Statement of Purpose
of the Unitheist Fellowship

The Statement of Purpose of the Unitheist Fellowship is the introductory text on the homepage
Welcome to the Unitheist Fellowship, an ecumenical, faith-building community. As truth is encompassing, universality of knowledge is a function of enlightenment.

Ours is a construct not to supplant but enrich— that the beliefs we hold, like the more technical aspects of our lives, are ready not only for these tumultuous yet hopeful times but for the unknowable future.

Nor must tradition be abandoned, rather recast in the context of our age, with its wonders of discovery and cosmic modes. Such insights develop principles inherent to all, conducive to unity and peace.

Exposition

Welcome to the Unitheist Fellowship... At this time we are not an organization in a formal sense, but a gathering place for unitheists and those interested in finding out more about unitheism.

an ecumenical, faith-building community... Ecumenical means having cosmic scope or universality, or promoting unity among churches or religions— here both senses are applicable. Faith as we use it means belief in the inherent goodness of life, purpose, and a wondrous future, guided by reason yet not afraid to venture beyond realms of known science.

As truth is encompassing, universality of knowledge is a function of enlightenment... In the same way scientific laws are consistent throughout the universe, so are ultimate truths. Peoples of faith in the universe, to the extent they honestly seek revelation, will gravitate toward universal spiritual laws, tending to unite on at least the basics.

Ours is a construct not to supplant but enrich... Rather than starting by asking what is wrong with our faith and what parts should be dispensed with, we ask how we can build on what we have. We already possess ingredients for spiritual growth, perhaps lacking only a more applicable way of implementing them.

that the beliefs we hold, like the more technical aspects of our lives... In these fast-changing times we recognize the importance of knowing how to use a computer and a cell phone. Do we similarly recognize the importance of keeping our spirituality up to date?

are ready not only for these tumultuous yet hopeful times, but for the unknowable future... Despite the acceleration of change there is reason to cheer, for we exponentially discover, create, and thus empower ourselves, giving us the capability to keep pace with our own progress even if we don’t always know where it is taking us.

Nor must tradition be abandoned... Ecumenical trends don’t necessarily posit blending aspects of cultural heritage, or diminution of the richness and diversity they impart. Creeds or precepts that might pass out of favor in revelation of new light remain worthy of remembrance, at least as personally relevant steps to growth.

rather recast in the context of our age, with its wonders of discovery and cosmic modes... By seeing a historic belief system as a product of its time we can update it to relevance in ours. Wonders of discovery refers to what we might see on Nova or National Geographic, while cosmic modes references our astrophysical and universal world views.

Such insights develop principles inherent to all, conducive to unity and peace. Objective analyses of faiths and philosophies past and present can, in the context of history and science, guide us toward deeper understanding, empathy, and essential commonality of belief.
