Weird ‘inside-out’ apartments with balconies indoors leave people baffled

The TikTok was viewed 3.6 million times and has racked up more than 400,000 likes – with viewers agreeing with Rachel that the apartments are ‘inside out’

A TikTok video has gone viral showing an apartment building filled with bizarre indoor balconies.

Rachel, a medical student from Virginia, US, was moving out of her home in a building in Blackburg when she decided to share the bizarre feature.

While she said her apartment itself is “regular” – albeit a little “outdated” – she was baffled by the balcony feature, which leads out onto an indoor communal space with various other balconies.

“I thought they were so weird and unique,” Rachel told Jam Press.

“The building is really old so it was just kind of eerie, reminding me of a liminal space.”

Rachel filming the inside of the building for a TikTok post (@rayyy.of_sunshine), calling it the “weirdest apartment complex I’ve ever seen”.

The post was viewed 3.6 million times and has racked up more than 400,000 likes – with viewers agreeing with Rachel.

One person said: “Inside out apartment.”

“This makes me uncomfy,” another person added.

Someone else commented: “Yikes and cold weird lighting and floor – just freakish.”

“It could be cool when you wanna argue with your neighbours,” one person joked.

Someone else said: “Every door will lead you inside, never outside. Horror movie vibe.”

Another person described it as “prison vibes”, while someone else agreed, calling it “fancy jail”.

“Whose idea was it to put the damn balconies inside?” one person asked.

Other viewers guessed what the purpose of the balconies was.

One person said: “Part of me thinks this was a jail.”

“Soo do they all come out on their balcony at the same time and say good morning and good night to each other?” another person wondered.

Someone else commented: “They took ‘spy on your neighbour’ to a whole new level.”

Rachel later found out the balconies were present in lieu of windows – which many of the apartments did not have.

She explained: “Some rooms literally don’t have windows and apparently that doesn’t meet fire code, but if they have a balcony then it’s fine because then if there’s a fire then they can jump from the balcony.”
